Participants utilised their newly found filming skills and knowledge of gender based violence to produce this video, hoping that it will be used as a tool to engage others in conversations about the importance of gender equality and the actions that can be taken to prevent violence against women.

All the participants interviewed each other, learned to work in small crews to shoot and do sound for sit down and observational environments, and performed thematic motifs as b-roll. It was made all in one room. I edited the final product.

Presented by Youthworx, Our Voices is a youth-led initiative that empowers newly arrived or refugee young people to create films that are meaningful for them.

As part of the 2018 program I mentored a group of four young Syrians who responded to the theme of belonging. They created a powerful short hybrid film titled ‘Stay Strong’, utilising green screen, autobiographical storytelling, and metaphorical performance to express the injury of distance and hope for future.

“The struggle of people against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting. We need to talk about Beersheba / Bi’ir as-Sab / Be’er Sheva.

We need to talk about 1917. 1947. 1948. And we need to talk about today, as the already displaced communities of Naqab Bedouin Palestinians are displaced yet again by the demolition of their homes for forest projects of the Jewish National Fund (JNF).”

I mentored Yael and Liam to shoot and edit this short video for AJDS social media in October 2017.
